Probiotic CFU, Species and Storage: What to Check Before Buying

A probiotic’s CFU number is only one part of its label. Check the organisms identified, the serving size, expiry and storage instructions before comparing products.

What does CFU mean?

CFU stands for colony-forming units, a measure used to count viable microorganisms. A larger number alone does not establish greater benefit. Evidence depends on the particular organism, strain, dose and intended use. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements: Probiotics.

Species and strains are not interchangeable

A species name, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, is not a complete strain identifier. Strain identifiers often include additional letters or numbers. If a label lists species without these identifiers, do not assume results from research on a named strain apply to that product.

What does the Flortariko label declare?

The Flortariko label states 45 billion CFU per capsule, divided between three species:

  • Streptococcus thermophilus: 28 billion CFU.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: 12 billion CFU.
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum: 5 billion CFU.

These add up to the stated total of 45 billion. The label does not give strain identifiers, so this is a species-level description, not evidence for a particular strain-specific effect.

How should it be stored?

Follow the actual pack instructions. The Flortariko label specifies storage at no more than 30°C, protected from heat and moisture. Keep the container properly closed and avoid leaving it in a hot car. Check expiry and ask the supplier whether a stated CFU count is guaranteed through expiry if that is not explicit.

How long does a pack last?

The label direction is one capsule daily with water. On that schedule, 30, 60 and 90 capsules provide 30, 60 and 90 days. Pack count and CFU count answer different questions: duration versus declared organisms per capsule.

Is a probiotic suitable for everyone?

Do not assume so. The label calls for medical advice for people with weakened immunity. Persistent digestive symptoms also deserve professional assessment rather than relying on a supplement alone.
